Losing Weight With Diabetes

How To Lose Weight With Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus, commonly referred to as Diabetes implies a state of excessive glucose in the blood due to either an insulin deficiency or resistance to the circulating insulin. Obesity is one of the most common co-morbidities of diabetes. It is not only a risk factor for developing diabetes but also worsens its control and outcome. Thus losing weight in diabetes cannot be stressed enough.

Weight loss helps in reducing the resistance to insulin which makes controlling diabetes much easier. Also, the extra weight itself, which demands additional insulin compared to a thin individual, once lost, reduces the amount of insulin required to maintain the blood glucose levels, automatically reducing the burden of external medical treatment.

The key here is to lose weight by not just reducing calories consumed each day but by accompanying exercises which burn the accumulated fat.

  1. Small but frequent meals at regular intervals are ideal for diabetics rather than consuming just 2 or 3 large meals throughout the day.
  2. Meals must not be skipped or delayed too much.
  3. Avoiding snacking on junk foods is important.
  4. Fruits, vegetables, protein-rich foods, moderate amount of carbohydrates and minimal fats in the diet are the right way to a healthy, balanced diet that shall help lose the extra pounds without causing nutritional deficiencies or making one starve.
  5. Avoiding alcohol is crucial to weight loss.
  6. Large amount of water consumption is always a healthy option as it detoxifies the body of waste metabolites and reenergizes the body.

It is important to build in a regular exercise regimen into your daily routine. The exercises need not be very rigorous or for too long.

  1. Simple brisk walks for 30 minutes daily are easier to stick to and more beneficial in the long term.

Religiously following the diet and exercise along with regular follow-ups with the diabetes consultant is the mantra to cut down obesity and manage diabetes successfully.
